Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Work on a long-awaited road project in southwest Rochester is scheduled to begin in two weeks.

The project involves the intersection of 16th St and Mayowood Rd SW.

The busy intersection is located a few blocks east of Apache Mall and will be completely rebuilt to accommodate the heavy traffic flow in that area.

The Rochester Public Works Department says there will be no eastbound traffic during the duration of the project, which is scheduled to begin April 18th.

Motorists will only be allowed to use one westbound lane between 6th Ave on the east and Apache Drive on the west. Left turns will be permitted onto Mayowood Road for southbound and westbound motorists.

The project will relocate the current intersection to the west of the current site. Traffic lights will be installed in the new intersection and there will be additional work to the surrounding roadway.

There will also be miscellaneous work at a number of intersections to tie the signal systems together along 16th Street SW and Salem Road. These intersections include:

  • 16th Street SW and Broadway Avenue South
  • 16th Street SW and Apache Drive SW
  • 16th Street SW and the northbound on-ramp to TH 52
  • 16th Street SW and Salem Road SW
  • Fox Valley Drive SW and Salem Road SW

The overall project is scheduled to be completed by the end of October.
