With the winds set to start whipping and the inevitable cold forecast to come in behind them, I'm making a conscious effort to enjoy not just the holidays, but our upcoming winter season here in Minnesota, as well. Here's how I started...

With Thanksgiving being only a little over a week away, it's easy to look forward to the holiday season that's knocking on our doorstep. There is all that great holiday food and drink, the special traditions, the getting together with family and friends.

But thanks to this article I posted about yesterday that explains some secrets Norwegians use to not only endure but enjoy the entire winter season, I've also made a mental note to try to change my mindset about what I used to believe were those long, bleak winter months that set in after the holidays are in our rear view mirror.

As a start, here's a quick yet evocative poem I saw on a friend's Facebook page yesterday which helped me to start thinking in the right direction. Now, I'm looking forward to spending an hour or two during our upcoming cold weather this weekend in front of the fire with a cup of peppermint mocha and a good Vince Flynn book.

“November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.

With night coming early,
And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost by the gate.

The fires burn
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring.”
