Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Olmsted County Sheriff's Department will be spreading some holiday cheer through the remainder of the holiday season, thanks to an anonymous donation.

Sheriff Kevin Torgerson says an elderly woman came into the law enforcement center on Thursday seeking a meeting with him, but he was out of the office of the time. After it was made clear the sheriff was unavailable, Sheriff Torgerson says the woman handed over 20 Walmart gift cards worth $50 each and asked that deputies hand them out to kids who need a lift at Christmas time. She left without providing her name.

Sheriff Torgerson says he wishes he had been present to personally thank the woman, "Your kindness and generosity at this time of year thinking of folks especially the children who may find this time of year a difficult time is remarkable."

Torgerson says gift cards have been handed out to patrol officers, who have been directed to look for the right situations, particularly those involving children who could use some good in their lives during this holiday season.
