When the weather forecast first starting saying our first major winter storm of the season was headed our way, there were a few tasks I undertook to make sure we were ready for whatever Old Man Winter might throw at us.

First, I headed out to the garage and make sure our snow removal equipment was ready to go. Sometime in early November, I moved the snowblower out of storage and got it ready for the winter season, but seeing as it was so warm, I hadn't used it since then. Just to make sure it'd start when I need it later tonight and tomorrow, I gassed it up and tried it out. Luckily, it powered right up.

Also today-- though not necessarily because of the storm-- we had a service technician out to check out our gas fireplace. Within the last week, it had mysteriously been shutting itself off even though we'd still had it turned on. Turns out, it wasn't anything serious-- just an adjustment needed to seal up the front plate. So, we're good to go with a roaring fire later tonight.

And finally, on the way in, I stopped at a local auto parts store and picked up some glass cleaner and water repellent and sprayed it on the windshield and back window of my SUV. A couple of years ago when we had a really wet, heavy snowfall, the snow was so heavy on my windshield that my wipers stopped working (so as not to burn the motor out). That made for a tough drive home. So, knowing that we're supposed to get some heavy snow, I'm hoping this treatment will help any wet, heavy snow slide right off the windshield while I'm on my way home Monday night or heading to work Tuesday morning.

And, thanks to all the leftover food we still have around the house from Christmas, there's no need for us to stock up on milk, bread or eggs, either, like some folks do when a major winter storm hits.

Have you done anything extra to get ready for our impending big snowstorm?
