Lanesboro, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has issued a statement concerning a fatal police involved shooting that occurred in Fillmore County Sunday night.

The statement identifies the man shot by Rochester Police Sergeant Steve Thompson as 45-year-old Kristofer Daniel Youngquist of rural Lanesboro.

The BCA says Fillmore County Sheriff’s deputies went to Youngquist’s home around 1:30 Sunday afternoon while investigating a domestic assault reported earlier in the day. The deputies then requested assistance from the Rochester/Olmsted Emergency Response Unit.

According to the preliminary investigation, Youngquist was spotted walking around his property carrying a rifle. When the tactical team from Rochester entered his property, Youngquest retreated into his home. After three hours of negotiations and that repeated orders to surrender, Youngquist emerged from his residence with a rifle and pointed the weapon at the officers. Sergeant Thompson opened fire, fatally injuring Youngquist.

It was later determined a rifle was a pellet gun.

Sergeant Thompson has been the place on paid administrative leave while the incident is under investigation, which is standard procedure.
