Summer is here! So are all the wonderful summer activities that the season has to offer. Nowadays, pretty much everyone wears sunscreen when spending time outside. But what if the ingredients in some sunscreens could actually cause more harm than good?

Last year, we shared some information suggesting why you should stop using spray sunscreen. Now, here is some information regarding sunscreens and some ingredients to avoid.

A recent story from newsmax.com shared the Environmental Working Group’s 2015 Guide to Sunscreens, which suggests that there are several brands of sunscreen that contain one or more ingredients that may actually be detrimental in our fight against skin cancer.

The most common of them is something called retinyl palmitate, a form of vitamin A which may actually speed the development of skin cancer tumors. This ingredient may be found in as much as 20% of sunscreens on the market today.

Other harmful ingredients include something called oxybenzone, which is known to be disruptive to the hormone system, and methylisothianzolinone, which is a preservative that has raised safety concerns in Europe.

In addition to finding these and other questionable ingredients in sunscreen, the Environmental Working Group also found that many sunscreens tout higher SPF ratings than their products actually have.

The next time you’re out shopping for sunscreen, be sure to check the label for these ingredients. And if you find them, you might want to think twice about using those products and finding a sunscreen that doesn’t contain them instead…
