Sure, our state shares its northern border with Canada. And, yes, it's cold here, just like it is there. And we both like hockey. But, do we here in Minnesota share the same slang as our neighbors to the north?

To some folks who aren't from here, Minnesota is seems like it's so far north, it practically IS Canada. Not that there's anything wrong with that; I really like Canada, myself. But Minnesota isn't Canada. Or is it?

Check out this list of 20 Actual Canadian Slang Words. While some of them are distinctly Canadian, a few others are eerily close to things we say here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Take a look at a few of these:

Loonie: the Canadian one-dollar coin. Okay, we don't use that one.

Two-Four: A case of twenty-four beers. We don't use that one either (although it does sound kind of fun!)

Toque (pronounced “tuke”): A knit hat usually worn in winter. I've heard this one a time or two during our long winters.

Pop: a sweetened carbonated beverage. Yes, I've heard this one quite a bit. Heck, I even used this one while growing up back in central Wisconsin.

Hammered: very drunk. Why, yes, I've heard -- and have used -- this one rather often here in Minnesota. And Wisconsin, come to think of it!

Are there any on the list you use here in Minnesota?
