Domestic Violence Month Activities In Rochester
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month. Last year in Minnesota, there were at least 38 people killed due to domestic violence. It’s a complex crime that has a devastating impact on the women and children who are victims of battering.
There are several Domestic Violence Awareness month activities in our area this month sponsored by the Family Violence Coordinating Council. There’s a program on October 20th and throughout the month there will be three different displays, one at RCTC and two more at the Government Center.
*“Tombstone Display” at RCTC will show names and stories of women, men and children who lost their lives in Minnesota as a result of Domestic Violence.
*“Doors Project” is on display at the Government Center Rotunda and shows domestic violence through the eyes of children and youth in our community.
*“Remember My Name Display” at the Government Center shows pictures and biographies of the victims who lost their lives due to Domestic Violence.
Finally, on October 30th at 5:30pm at the RCTC Campus (just inside the atrium), there will be a program called “It’s Time To Talk”. It’s a commemoration of those impacted by Domestic Violence. This event will honor the 38 Minnesotans that died in 2013 as a result of domestic violence. They will also celebrate the survivors. Information booths will be available from 10am to 6:30pm.
If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, there is help. Call the Women’s Shelter at 507-285-1010 or visit www.womens-shelter.org . You don’t have to go through this alone.
