Vandals have disrupted a project at a popular Rochester park.

Police were notified Friday morning about the extensive damage at the Prairie House project at the Quarry Hill Nature Center.

Executive Director Pam Meyer describes the damage as “very expensive” with a preliminary estimate of at least $100,000.

The vandals struck late Thursday or early Friday. Meyer says the damage includes broken windows and construction equipment and kicked-in walls. She says the vandals also poured paint all over the building. She says insurance should help cover the repair costs.

The project was scheduled to be completed by November. Meyer says the vandalism will cause a delay of at least 30 days.

The Prairie House project will be the latest educational facility at Quarry Hill.  Its funding is included in the current capital fundraising campaign that has a $2.6-million goal. Meyer says they only need $200,000 to reach the goal.
