Seeing that today is the first day of school for most students throughout southeastern Minnesota, my Facebook news feed has been filled with pictures of my friends' kids as they head off to another year of academic endeavors.  I didn't want to be left out of the fun, but seeing as my wife and I don't have kids, here's my First Day Of School 2014 picture.

That just shows you how much social media has changed another aspect of our lives-- and how much things have changed since I was a student in junior or senior high school. I always hated the first day of school. I didn't mind school itself so much, but that first day was a cruel reminder those lazy days of summer, when you could stay up late and sleep in and didn't have to be anywhere, were gone.  After a week or so, I was back into the groove of going to school again, but the first day was always a little rough.

Now, though, in addition to the agony (if your kids were like me) of having to get up and head back to class for another year, thanks to Facebook, all your parents' friends get to SEE you in your agony, courtesy of all those First Day Of School pictures. I know a lot of people really like them-- if only to see how grown up your kids have miraculously become-- overnight, it seems. Where does the time go?

One thing I noticed, though, was that most of the kids I saw in today's posts seemed to be happy to be heading back to school.  I'm guessing you could have used many adjectives to describe my mood on the first day of school, but 'happy' wouldn't have been among them. Wait-- maybe that was the parents' reaction to the kids heading back to class!
