My whole life I've had breast cancer in the back of my mind. My Grandmother died when I was 2 from it and my best friend is a recent survivor. But it wasn't until I ran Unleash The She the other weekend that I realized how closely related Ovarian Cancer and Breast Cancer are.

More than 400 women are diagnosed every year in Minnesota. About 20 to 25 percent of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer have a hereditary tendency to develop the disease. The most significant risk factor for ovarian cancer is an inherited genetic mutation in one of two genes: breast cancer gene 1 (BRCA1) or breast cancer gene 2 (BRCA2).

At the race, they provided a FREE resource to find out if I have the genetic mutations inherited that can cause either one of these cancers. MAGENTA is a study aims to improve the availability of genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes to at-risk individuals through the use of an online genetic testing service. Participants don't have to leave their homes, find childcare or take time off their jobs.

THIS IS CURRENTLY BEING OFFERED FREE OF CHARGE. As of recent, more than 170 women signed up — putting Minnesota at the top of the list for participants.

Participants who qualify for this study will fill out personal and family health history information, undergo genetic testing (saliva sample) for 19 genes associated with inherited cancer risk

Signs and symptoms of Ovarian Cancer can be so subtle and may include:

  • Abdominal bloating or swelling
  • Quickly feeling full when eating
  • Weight loss
  • Discomfort in the pelvis area
  • Changes in bowel habits, such as constipation
  • A frequent need to urinate
