Something happened at the US Olympic swimming trials that hadn't happened in 52 years: A former swimmer from the University of Minnesota made Team USA.

In case you weren't watching Tuesday's 100 meter time trials on NBC, David Plummer, who graduated from the University of Minnesota back in 2008, secured a place on the U.S. Olympic swim team. Plummer was THISCLOSE to actually winning the race, finishing just 0.02 seconds behind Ryan Murphy, the race winner. Plummer ended up coming second in the 100-meter backstroke, which still means he's officially an Olympian and will be on his way to Rio as a part of the Team USA.

“I’m really, really tired, but it feels good,” Plummer said in an interview with the Star Tribune. “I think I’ve still got more in that race. I’ve still got more I can squeeze out of the last 25 (meters), for sure. So it will be a matter of just tightening things up in the next few weeks.”

Check out how close the race was... and bust out those red, white and blue banners to help cheer on a fellow Minnesotan down in Rio!
