Granger Smith to Play Benefit for Flint Water Crisis Victims

The water crisis in Flint, Mich., has earned Granger Smith's attention and support. The rising country star, along with newcomer and Flint native Tegan Marie, will play a benefit concert for the city's Hurley Children's Clinic.

Smith and Marie (age 12) will perform at the Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center's atrium on April 7. For $10, fans will be able to enjoy country music and sample food from local restaurants -- and all of the proceeds will go to the Hurley Children’s Clinic, in an effort to help kids and families who have been affected by the Flint water crisis.

In 2014, the city of Flint switched drinking water sources from the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department to the Flint River. That water has led to serious problems, including lead poisoning, and caused a huge public health danger; several lawsuits have been filed. In January, the governor of Michigan declared the city to be in a state of emergency, and soon after, President Obama declared a federal state of emergency. The Hurley Children’s Clinic was among the first to report about elevated blood lead levels.

Though she's not yet a household name, Marie has garnered a huge following on social media: She has over 100,000 fans on Facebook, and she will be opening for Hunter Hayes at an upcoming show. Smith, meanwhile, is climbing the charts with his current single, "If the Boot Fits." He recently celebrated his first No. 1 single with "Backroad Song," and his new record Remington debuted on March 4.
