These frozen bubbles form when microbes consume dead organic matter on the bottom of the lake. In warmer temps, the bubbles just rise to the top and pop. But in the winter, they are frozen within the ice. The bubbles are made of highly flammable gas methane. The gas itself is fairly harmless, but if you try to light one, it can cause an explosion.
