The construction of the first DMC building, called 'Discovery Square,' is well underway along 4th Street southwest in Rochester. But what's also under construction a few blocks away, along 3rd Avenue between 5th and 6th Streets?

I often take 6th Street west to Highway-52 as I head back home from the Quick Country 96.5 Worldwide Headquarters. And, I've noticed that, since late October, there have been even MORE buildings town down with new construction underway.

Sure, I'd heard of the 'Discovery Square' project (right across the street from our studios), but I apparently missed the details on this project. It's also a DMC project, but what's replacing an old apartment building and several single-family homes is something called the 'Residences At Discovery Square.'

And, according to this Finance & Commerce story, it'll be a shiny, new 6-story apartment building that will contain 150 new apartments, along with other 'mixed use' space on the ground floor. And, yeah, those new apartments will be pretty nice-- and expensive.

"Most of the apartments will be targeted to the higher end of the downtown market but a few will be affordable," Thoreson McCormack, an architect of the new building said in the story. “They’re a little bit above market-rate, but we do have some accommodations for workforce housing,” she also noted in the story.

So, that's what's being built. As an aside, though, did you catch that term McCormack used?  "Workforce housing." Yeah. That's apparently what they're calling those few apartments us regular working stiffs will be able to afford downtown in the not-too-distant future. I'm glad my wife and I were able to buy our house six years ago when we moved to Rochester-- I don't think we'd be able to afford anything now!
