It looks like there will be some changes to the recipe in everyone's favorite canned meat that just happens to call southern Minnesota home.

That's right, Hormel Food's SPAM, headquartered just down the road in Austin, announced earlier this week that there are a few changes coming to its recipe. In a release, the company said it will be moving towards a new, 'clean label initiative' that simplifies the ingredients used in its products.

“We know that a growing number of consumers are looking for products made with simple, familiar ingredients,” Scott Aakre, vice president of corporate innovation and new product development at Hormel Foods, said in the release.

According to BringMeTheNews, though, not all SPAM products will be affected. "A spokesman clarified to the Associated Press, though, that only SPAM Lite and SPAM Less Sodium will see their recipes changed. SPAM Classic, which already has fewer ingredients than its aforementioned cousins, will stay the same," the story said.

The story said that other Hormel lines, like their canned chili as well as Dinty Moore stew are also having their recipes simplified, as well. The company has been "cleaning up its labels and some of its brands have been reformulated to remove preservatives, artificial colors, and nitrates," the story noted.
