There's a new survey out that says our first cars are pretty much forever embedded in our memories. It says over 90 percent of us can remember the color of our first car, 79 percent remember the name we gave our first car, and 41 percent can even remember the license plate number.

My first car, outside of driving dad's 1978 Olds Delta 88 (which was a tank, by the way-- and about the size of an freighter you'd see in the harbor up in Duluth), was a two-tone tan and brown 1980 Plymouth Horizon. Can you say babe magnet? I didn't give it a name, but, now that I think of it, I think the license plates on it were FXS-950. Who knew I'd remember that?!

I guess I remember a lot about my first car, mainly because it was a piece of junk. It could only do about 55 miles an hour, because if you dared drive any faster than that, it would overheat. Which it did. Several times on the way back from our family's cottage up north.

It turns out the car had once been submerged in water-- either it broke through the ice on some lake or it was in a flood, because it started rusting out faster than we could repair it. When it rained, the floorboards in the back seat filled with water. The speedometer cable rusted out, so you didn't know how fast you were going. Then, the gas tank rusted out. After that, I finally sold it. For around $100, if I remember. Which was probably about $75 more than it was worth.

What do you remember about your first car?
