Eveleth, MN (KROC-AM News) - State officials have released information about the law enforcement officers involved in a recent fatal shooting on the Iron Range.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says Deputy Derrick Deutsch joined the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department about a year ago after serving two years with the Kanabec County Sheriff’s Office. Joseph Bradach has been employed as a police officer for the City of Gilbert for about six years.

A preliminary report from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension concerning the investigation into the death of 40-year-old Jeffrey Golnick says the Chaska man started a gun battle with the officers by shooting and wounding Deputy Deutsch, prompting Deutch and Officer Bradach to open fire and fatally wound Golnick.

The two officers were looking for a person wanted on an arrest warrant at a residence near Eveleth on December 22nd when they encountered Golnick and another person in a vehicle. Golnik, who was not the person named in the warrant, fled on foot, which set the stage for the deadly confrontation. The BCA says notes the shoot remains under investigation.

The wounded deputy was taken to a hospital in Duluth, where he was treated and released.
