Today is garbage pick-up day in our neighborhood in northwest Rochester. So, everybody has their garbage containers at the curb, ready to be emptied by their waste haulers. But is it OK to toss something in somebody else's container?

The reason I ask is, as I was taking our dog, Chance, for a walk this morning, I noticed another woman walking her black lab on the other side of our street. She was also carrying the little plastic baggie. Now if you're a fellow responsible dog owner, you know what's inside: That's right, dog poo.

When you take your dog for a walk, you always have to bring a plastic bag, just in case your dog happens to do their business along the way. Then, you scoop it up, and carry it with you until get home and can dispose of it properly. Or, if you're the woman I saw this morning, and then you just toss the baggie into whichever house's garbage container is the closest-- which happened to be a house near ours.

I saw another person do this same thing about a year ago, so maybe it's more common than I think. And, because this was early enough in the morning, I'm guessing the trash container at the house near ours hadn't yet been emptied, so I'm sure the baggie was picked up with the rest of the trash and there wasn't an issue. I wouldn't really care if it was my trash somebody tossed a baggie of dog poo into, either-- even though we're the ones paying a monthly fee to have their garbage picked up; it's not a public garbage can, like the ones at Silver Lake Park.

Now nobody, myself included, likes to carry a baggie filled with dog poo along with them on their walk-- especially if you're just starting out. And, I'm sure the house whose container this woman tossed her baggie into was none the wiser. But I've not been brave enough to throw something into somebody else's garbage, no matter how much I've wanted to.

What do you think?
