Rochester, MN  (KROC AM News)  - A Rochester teenager has been transferred from a Duluth Hospital to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester to continue his recovery from a tragic incident that occurred last week in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area wilderness.

14-year-old Jacob Walz, the nephew of First District Congressman Tim Walz, was critically injured when a severe thunderstorm toppled a tree onto a campsite along a lake near the Canadian border. 43-year-old Craig Walz, the brother of First District Congressman Tim Walz, was also struck by the tree and suffered fatal injuries.

A statement issued by the Congressman's office on Tuesday thanked everyone involved in the rescue operation and those who have extended their support to the family.

Today, Congressman Walz's nephew was transferred to Mayo Clinic in Rochester. The Walz family wants to thank the incredible team at Essentia Health - St. Mary's in Duluth for their care of Jacob and all those involved in Jacob's rescue. They want to express their immense gratitude for the continued outpouring of support from friends near and far.

As the family continues to grieve the loss of a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and son, they continue to be grateful for privacy.
