Kane Brown's "American Bad Dream" lyrics shine a bright light on dark realities in American culture. The 25-year-old singer broaches gun violence and police brutality in a way he feels is conversational, not controversial.

The "Lose It" singer says he's down the middle on issues of gun rights and gun control —his grandmother was a police detective growing up, so he saw both sides of the law. He wasn't nervous about including the song on his Experiment album, but had reservations during the writing process (with Sam Ellis, Josh Hoge and Chase McGill).

"But after we finished the song, I felt that we wrote it well enough that you could see that I wasn't trying to say anything bad ... just cause awareness," he tells Taste of Country. "No matter what artist you are, if you mention anything of this it's assumed people are going to give you hell for it."

Public response remains to be seen. Listen to the song from his new Experiment album below and then find the lyrics to "American Bad Dream" beneath this audio video.

Kane Brown's "American Bad Dream" Lyrics:

Remember when ninth grade was about getting laid / Skipping class trying not to get caught / Now you gotta take a test in a bulletproof vest / Scared to death that you might get shot.

It’s like I just closed my eyes / Everybody started falling for the devil’s disguise / That hides behind the lies that hide the truth / And I just can’t take it no more.

Chorus:
So wake me up from this American bad dream / Is it this messed up, or is it really reality / I’m becoming numb to all of this tragedy / Somebody wake me up from this American bad dream / From this American bad dream.

I remember doing ten over the limit would just get you a ticket / Just an inconvenience getting stopped / Bad cops played the jury, made the good ones worry / About showing up and doing their job.

It’s like I just closed my eyes / Everybody started falling for the devil’s disguise / That hides behind the lies that hide the truth / And I can’t take it no more.

Repeat Chorus

Yeah this American bad dream / From this American bad dream, oh / It’s like I just closed my eyes / Everybody started falling for the devil’s disguise.

Repeat Chorus

Wake me up, wake me up / Wake me up from this American bad dream / From this American bad dream.
