Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The name Mayo Civic Center will remain and some of the internal venues of the facility will be renamed to further recognize the contributions and legacy of the Mayo Clinic and the Mayo brothers.

The Rochester City voted 6-1 Monday night to approve a resolution to continue using the current Mayo Civic Center name on the newly expanded convention and events center. First Ward Councilmember Ed Hruska the lone dissenting vote.

The Mayo Civic Center Commission and the Rochester Convention and Visitors Bureau had recommended changing the name of the facility to the Rochester Minnesota Convention and Events Center based on extensive research that found some confusion involving the Mayo name and the larger Rochester, New York might hamper marketing efforts.

The facility has carried the Mayo name since the original Mayo Civic Auditorium was presented to the city as a gift from Doctors Charles and William Mayo in 1939 and prior to rejecting the proposed name change, the Council voted unanimously to approve some recommended changes to enhance the recognition of that gift and the Mayo brothers contributions to the community. They call for renaming Presentation Hall as the Dr. Charles H. Mayo Presentation Hall. The current McDonnell Foyer will be renamed the Dr. William J. Mayo Reception Hall and the concourse connecting the two internal venues would be known as the Mayo Community Gallery and will feature rotating exhibits of historical artifacts and other museum quality displays.
