Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Mayo Clinic has announced the completion of the $1.5-billion dollar switch over to the new Epic electronic medical records system. The milestone was reached on Saturday when the Mayo campuses in Jacksonville Florida and Scottsdale Arizona went “live” on the new system.

“Having one integrated system builds on our core mission of putting the needs of patients first,” says Steve Peters, M.D., co-chair of the initiative. “This will enable us to enhance services, accelerate innovation and provide better care.”

After years of development and planning, in what was called the Plummer project, the immensely complex software package was first put to use by the Mayo Clinic Health System in Wisconsin in July of last year followed by the Mayo Clinic Health System in Minnesota last November before Epic went “live” at the Rochester campus in May. It is now used by about 52,000 Mayo Clinic employees in 90 hospitals and clinics throughout the Mayo system.
