Minnesota Doesn’t Want Teens Voting

The idea of lowering the voting age came after the "March for Our Lives" protest that took place last month. A Washington council member proposed the change, and right now, according to USA Today, the majority of their city council members are for it happening. If it goes through, people over the age of 16 will be able to vote both in local AND federal elections in Washington, D.C.

It has been four decades since the voting age was changed in this country. It was lowered to 18 during the Vietnam war after students protested that it was unfair that they could be drafted, but not vote.

With the possibility of it happening in D.C., I was curious to see how people in Minnesota would feel about a change here. The vast majority of our followers agreed, 16 is too young to vote. In fact, many people suggested bumping the voting age back up.

Chantell C: I mean I could barely get out of bed to be on time for school at 16 lol....let alone vote.

Adam H: Probably not a good idea, but there are plenty of people my age who are far from being civic minded, don't know who represents them in their own State, couldn't name the federal branches of government, etc. Should they be voting?

Holland V: No way! Most 18 yr old aren't even educated enough to vote, I'd rather have no voters than un-educated voters.

Mary P: No. Most kids that age don't have any clue what's going on in politics.

In an interview with USA Today, a 16-year-old Sophomore said, "We work, we pay taxes, we care for family members, we can drive, we can do so many other things. So, adding voting onto that isn't going to be that big of a responsibility. We can handle it."
