A Minnesota landmark is celebrating its anniversary this week, as the Mall of America turns 24 years old.

The famous shopping center, located on the sight of the former home of both the Vikings and Twins (that'd be Metropolitan Stadium) in Bloomington, first opened its doors on August 11, 1992. Since then, of course, it's gone on to be the most-visited mall in the country.

In fact, this WCCO story about MOA's 20th anniversary back in 2012 said that the mall routinely draws more than 40 million visitors each year. "That’s more than the combined populations of North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and all of Canada," the story noted.

And, MOA is only going to get bigger. The mall is currently in the middle of a $500 million expansion that, according to this Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal story, will add something called The Collections at MOA. It will "represent the 'luxury collection of retailers which will create a new and vibrant high-end shopping district at MOA,'" the story said.
