I'd first learned that this concoction had made its way to Rochesterfest earlier this week, so Friday I ventured over to the booth and tried me a  new Hot Beef Sundae. Here's how it went:

I'd first read about how this was inaugural year for the Hot Beef Sundae at Rochesterfest right here on QuickCountry.com. The thought of a sundae made of beef pretty much puts you into two camps: Those who can't wait to try it (me), or those who think it doesn't sound the least bit appetizing. I couldn't wait to dig in.

According to this Travel Channel article, the Hot Beef Sundae got its start just to our south, at the Iowa State Fair. It's been found at several other State Fairs, as well, although I'm not sure it's available here at Great Minnesota Get-Together... at least, not yet. In case you didn't see it, here's what's in a Hot Beef Sundae:

  • Texas bread
  • Roast beef
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Homemade gravy
  • Cheddar cheese
  • Cherry tomato (on top)

And, let me tell you-- it was really good! I loved it! And, it wasn't too big, either. I was originally picturing a massive mountain of food that would have most certainly necessitated a nap after eating it, but it was just about the right size for lunch.

The gravy had a nice flavor, the roast beef was tender, and the mashed potatoes were lump-free. It might be my new go-to food at Rochesterfest-- if it comes back next year, which I hope it does. And, maybe it'll be back in our neck of the woods before then, too-- are you listening Olmsted County Fair or Minnesota State Fair?

Here's more on this delicious, if curious-sounding, dish:
