New Minnesota Laws You Should Know in 2016
On January 1st, there will be some new laws that take effect in Minnesota. Yes, these will affect you, so take a quick look.
1. Proof of Insurance
When you apply for new license tabs or plates, you will be required to SHOW proof of insurance. Before, they just asked if you had insurance and if you answered yes that was good enough. This will cut down on the number of uninsured drivers on the roads.
2. Volunteer Firefighters
As of January 1st, the new law will extend health benefits for the families of volunteer firefighters killed in the line of duty. Before that, it was just offered to full-time firefighters.
3. License Plate Readers
License plate readers have been around for a while, but the new law states that police and other agencies using the devices have to lay out their own policies for maintaining the scans. They also have to punish the officers who misuse them, too. If they don't, the department can't use the scanners.
4. Winvesting
It authorizes raffles to banks to help others save money. It works like this: For every $25 you save, you'll get an entry to win a prize, like cash or other incentives.
