Prost! No matter if you enjoy it from a stein or DAS BOOT you'll leave saying Ziggy Zaggyy Ziggy Zaggy Oy Oy Oy. It is the beginning of Oktoberfest in many places this weekend and if you're looking to get out of town here are two that are near enough to make it worth the road trip.

Today and tomorrow at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds you've got the Twin Cities Oktoberfest that features Summit Brewing Company's Oktoberfest brew and a selection of other Summit beers, wines and cider, traditional German food, live music and entertainment, great people watching, festival games, shopping and more.

One thing that is cool about this one is you get a stein to mark the occasion and your first beer with admission. You are encouraged to get your tickets online rather than at the event itself, here is a link to snag tickets. My wife and I have attended this one in the past and it is SO much fun, and the music wasn't too bad either!

The other Oktoberfest that is worth the drive is to our West in New Ulm. The festival will kick off its annual Oktoberfest this weekend, which is modeled after one of the world’s largest celebrations in Munich, Germany. This festival is now in its 37th year and has music, beer and people who are proud to show off their German heritage.

Several main events will be held over two weekends. The one place you want to be is the Schells Brewery, trust me on this one. Something that stands out to me is that there is a Germanic-American Day parade that is held downtown at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 6.  If you miss the parade, don't worry there is another one next weekend on Saturday, October 13.

New Ulm’s Oktoberfest was ranked among the best Oktoberfest celebrations in the nation by USA Today, Midwest Living, and the Travel Channel. Get more info on the celebration in New Ulm here.
