Now that it's getting colder, my wife and I like to open a good bottle of red wine every now and again. We've been out to Napa and the Central Coast of California a couple of times and have done wine tastings at several vineyards. I certainly wouldn't say we know a lot about wine, but at least we know not to order a bottle of wine worth almost $4,000. Which puts us one step ahead of THIS guy, apparently!

I first heard the story on ABC radio news yesterday of how a guy named Joe Lentini was dining at Bobby Flay's restaurant at the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City. Now, I know enough to realize that if you're at Bobby Flay's restaurant, that right there is gonna set you back a few more bucks than if you'd headed down to Applebee's at Apache Mall.

And boy, does he end up shelling out more! According to the story on Inquisitor.com, Mr. Lentini explained, "I asked the waitress if she could recommend something decent because I don’t have experience with wine. She pointed to a bottle on the menu. I didn’t have my glasses. I asked how much and she said, ‘Thirty-seven fifty.'”

Not knowing much about wine, Joe was unaware the bottle he just ordered did, indeed, cost a little more than just shy of $40 -- it was actually worth $3,750! Hoo boy! That's a little more than he was intending to spend, I'm guessing.

The story goes on to say, "Mr. Lentini and his co-workers disputed the bill. They told the waitress of their misunderstanding and they reached somewhat of a deal with the restaurant. The guys paid $2,200 for the bottle of wine. A Borgata spokesperson said that there was 'no misunderstanding regarding the selection,' so the guys are definitely lucky to have caught a break."

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't necessarily call paying $2,200 for a bottle of wine "catching a break." It's also why, when we're out at a nice restaurant, my wife and I like to look at the wine list ourselves -- the bottom of the wine list, mind you -- before we order a bottle. Or, as is usually the case, I'll just order a beer!
