Paranoia has set in at Century High School

Students at Century High School were in a bit of a panic Friday. The game "Paranoia" has started which means the kids are doing a lot of Google searching, planning new routes for classes and changing their social media profiles...all for a good cause.

I stepped back a few years and took a journey into one of our local high schools to learn

more about the hype of Bear Creek Week at Century. I parked in the student lot, grabbed my TrapperKeeper from back in the day and was off to meet with the Student Body President, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Social Studies teacher, Kathryn Gardner.

Harmanpreet shared with enthusiasm, "I look forward to this week every single year.". Her smile was contagious as she mentioned that Century High School students have a goal of raising $25,000 for Bear Creek Services and Paws & Claws this year during their annual fundraiser.

Kathryn Gardner shared, "this is our teenagers at their absolute best" and I have to agree. The amount of money being raised for nonprofits in the community by these students is not an easy task, and yet they have found a way to make it fun and include as many people as possible. This truly is a win-win for all.

Paranoia is one of the activities being organized that seems to have the most anticipation and hype. Other events taking place at Century include an "Elf" movie night, breakfast with Santa, penny wars and several different activities being put on by different clubs.

Facebook comments by students and staff reflected the excitement of Bear Creek Week,

"I just love all of the unique ideas that people come up with to support Bear Creek. People from all different types of groups can find something to participate in and/or run... Whether it be singing telegrams, playing dodgeball, penny wars, or jailing a teacher... There is something for everyone, and everyone has an opportunity to contribute to a great cause. The fundraiser officially kicked off today and will end on December 22nd with a Bear Creek Extreme Assembly, which I hear is going to be a lot of fun. You can find the full list of activities at this link.

John Marshall and Mayo High School are also working on fundraising goals for area nonprofits and have already kicked off their events, including Paranoia. One activity that all three schools will be collaborating on is the Drumline Battle. The public is welcome to this event and this year it will be held at Century High School on December 20th.
