Riceville, IA (KROC AM News) -  A school district in northeast Iowa has canceled classes Thursday due to what officials say is “a situation” they became aware of Wednesday evening.

“ We received information in regards to a potential safety concern that was directed toward the Riceville Community School District. Due to the potential seriousness of this situation school will not be in session on 2-22-18.” The district says the Howard County Sheriff's Department is currently investigating the situation and we will release more details when they are available.”

Parents were notified of the situation late Wednesday night.  Riceville is about 15 miles south of the Minnesota/Iowa border.

The apparent threat comes one week after the deadly shooting rampage at a high school in Florida.

Meanwhile, a high school student was arrested as a suspect in a threat that led to a lengthy lockdown Wednesday of a Twin Cities school district.  Police say a social media post was discovered around 11:00 AM, indicating there would be a shooting at an Orono school at noon. School officials ordered a lockdown that lasted for five hours. Police say no weapon was found.
