Record Rain in Rochester; More Expected
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Southeast Minnesota is facing another day of rain and the threat of flooding.
It began raining in the Rochester area around 8:30 Wednesday night and continued through the overnight.
The National Weather Service says rain recorded at the Rochester airport between 11 p.m. and midnight totaled 1.71 inches - more than the daily record for September 21 that was set in 1986. The record was 1.38 inches.The airport daily total for Wednesday was 3.6 inches.
Rainfall totals in Olmsted County between 3 p.m. Wednesday and 3 a.m. Thursday were between 1 ½ - 3 inches. Totals were as high as 3 ½ inches in parts of Fillmore and Mower counties.
Heavy rain has also been reported in northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin.
There have been numerous reports of flooded roads and rising creeks and streams and the threat will persist Thursday as more rain is expected.
Two area school districts are being affected by the heavy rain. The Hayfield district will open two hours late.
The New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva (NRHEG) has decided not to open at all. Both districts are concerned about flooded and washed out roads.
