Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The late Rev. Billy Graham who died Wednesday at the age of 99 was a longtime Mayo Clinic patient and visitor.

His ties to Minnesota were very strong.

He founded the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in Minneapolis in 1950 and it was based there until moving to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1999.

He was often spotted in Rochester while a patient at Mayo.

One of the highlights of his long relationship with Mayo took place in 1986 when its Jacksonville site formally opened. It marked the first time Mayo established a group practice outside of its Rochester base. The keynote speaker?  The Rev. Billy Graham.
