Rochester Area Receives 3 – 4 Inches of Rain
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Skies finally cleared over the Rochester area late Saturday afternoon, ending a run of rain that began Thursday.
Rochester picked up more than three inches of rain during the period (.67” on Thursday, 1.44” on Friday and 1” on Saturday). Other parts of southeast Minnesota received even more rain during that period.
Most of the rain that fell in Rochester Friday came late in the afternoon with more than an inch in one hour. It also had an impact on area high school football games. According to KFIL sportscaster Luke Lonien, the Rochester Lourdes/Kasson-Mantorville game started an hour earlier than scheduled in hopes of avoiding severe weather. Three other games- Goodhue @ Rushford-Peterson,Spring Grove @ Houston and Stewartville @ LaCrescent were delayed about an hour because of the weather, including lightning. The Triton/Cannon Falls game was postponed and rescheduled for Saturday afternoon.
The rain has been beneficial for southeast Minnesota as signs of drought began developing in late August. Rochester’s moisture deficit was easily erased this past week. Rain was recorded at the Rochester airport on six of the first seven days of October. The year-to-date precipitation total has risen to over 30 inches, which is more than 2 inches above normal. That’s still seven inches below the total from this time a year ago.
All this rain has led to a rise in the levels of area creeks and rivers, including the Mississippi. The river is expected to rise to near flood stage later this week but no problems are anticipated.
There will be a slight chance of rain Monday night - and we could experience light scattered frost Tuesday morning as temperatures fall into the upper 30s, the coolest weather in the Rochester area since early May.
