Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Rochester Charter Commission has decided not to take a position on a proposal to consider changing the city’s election process to a rank choice voting system.

Tuesday’s vote was unanimous with three members absent.

Deputy City Attorney Dave Goslee says the commission was told at an earlier meeting that the switch would mean a major change in future elections at both the county and city level.

Supporters of the change will now have to wait to see if the City Council will take up the proposal.

Goslee says the council has the option of sending a proposed change to the commission that would address the rank choice concept. The commission would then decide to modify or endorse the council proposal - or do nothing. It would then be up to the council to put it in front of voters.

Supporters could submit a petition for a referendum on the proposal. Goslee says there are requirements that would have to be met, including the number of signatures.
