A local Rochester company has started a cool new campaign to raise money for protective vests for two of the Rochester Police Department's K9 members.

According to the Bon Appetit Canine Bakery (BACB) Unleashed website, the 'Operation Vest Defense' campaign was just started Friday, and is looking to raise $2,000 for two protective K9 vests.vests.

The vests will then be donated to Riley and Sarge, two yellow labs that are Rochester police K9 members currently in training, according to this KTTC story.

The BACB Unleashed website goes on describe why they've undertaken this campaign, saying, "Human police officers wear protective equipment on duty. Unfortunately, many K9 officers have no protective gear to wear. It can cost up to 15,000 to train a K9 officer and another “healthy” sum for food and veterinarian bills. It’s up to the community these heroes protect, to provide protection for them."

The company says will be donating 10-percent of the sale of any of its merchandise to the program. It will also be selling 'Operation Vest Defense' buttons for $10, which will be donated entirely to the campaign. You can also go to BACB Unleashed's website and donate money for the program, too.

I think it's a tremendous idea, and kudos to BACB Unleashed for launching, publicizing and supporting such a campaign! If you have a dog, be sure to check out the great merchandise BACB Unleashed offers. (And even if you don't have a dog, you can still make a donation.)

Of course, this isn't their first big donation to the community. Last year, BACB Unleashed raised money to buy 34 pet oxygen masks for the Rochester Fire Department, as well.

Well done, BACB Unleashed!
