Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Rochester fire crews had to deal with a high rise incident Friday but fortunately when they arrived, the small kitchen blaze had mostly been extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system.

The alarm came in around 4 p.m from Park Towers located along North Broadway. The fire was confined to the kitchen area of a unit on the 15th floor of the building. But there was water damage reported on several floors. Those areas were evacuated for awhile so the water could be taken care of. No word yet on the extent of the damage.

Another fire was reported an hour later at a duplex at 1108 3rd Avenue SE. It was found burning in a wall of the upstairs unit and investigators say it was started by discarded smoking materials that been left in a can on the deck. The fire spread from the can into the siding and then began burning the interior wall before it was noticed. Damage was estimated at $20,000.

Deputy Chief Steve Belau says, "The occupants were lucky the fire was discovered when it was rather than after they had gone to bed."  He says there were no working smoke detectors in the duplex.
