Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The thousands of volunteers who participated in the annual Litter Bit Better campaign in Rochester collected over 18,400 pounds of litter this year.

Organizers say the 9.2 tons of garbage and discarded items boost of the total amount collected since the first Litter Bit Better effort 11 years ago to approximately 131 tons. About 3250 people helped clean up 241 different sites throughout Rochester, giving the community a healthy spring cleanup.

By comparison, about 3,600 volunteers collected approximately 9.5 tons during the 2016 Litter Bit Better campaign.

Many of those volunteers were back this year. Organizers say about half of the participants this year had taken part in at least one other Litter Bit Better campaign and 7-percent have participated in all 11 spring clean ups. The volunteers also reported the average time they spent doing the actual clean up was between 1 ½ and 2 hours.

It’s expected public input on the plan will be taken prior to a formal vote.
