Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -The summer routine for thousands of Rochester families is over.

Classes begin Tuesday for most of the students in the Rochester Public School district and the Catholic schools.

Based on preliminary numbers, the district's new year could begin with more than 18,000 students. The 2016 headcount was around 17,700. As of Friday, the district reported the preliminary for the new year was 17,968 - with more students still checking in (Right now we are at 17,968 total but our halls are packed with students coming in.”).

A new enrollment projection report given to the School Board earlier this year predicted steady growth for the district in coming years. The report projected enrollment will grow by nearly 850 students during the next five years.

Over the past five years, enrollment  has grown by over 1000 students. Much of the growth during the next five-year period is expected at the high school level.

The district is also reminding families that immunizations or documentation for exclusion must be received by the first day of school.
