It happened a few years ago, and now, once again, Rochester's own Mayo Clinic has been named the number-one hospital in the nation by a new report.

The annual survey, done by U.S. News & World Report, has once again put Mayo Clinic on top of its list of the country's best hospitals, followed by Cleveland Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and UCLA Medical Center.

Mayo has been at the top of the prestigious list before, and in recent years has traded the top spots with many of those other institutions. According to KTTC-TV, Mayo Clinic President and CEO Dr. John Noseworthy "Gave credit to the staff and said the mark of excellence reflects 'the tremendous work of our staff every day in caring for our patients and their families.'"

The story also said Mayo "Was recognized for more #1 specialties than any other hospital in the country, eight in all:  Diabetes and endocrinology, Gastroenterology and GI surgery, Geriatrics, Gynecology, Nephrology, Neurology and neurosurgery, Pulmonology and Urology.  The news magazine ranked Mayo Clinic No. 2 in Cardiology and heart surgery, Ear, nose and throat, and Orthopedics.  Mayo was ranked No. 3 in Cancer treatment."

U.S. News & World Report has been measuring and ranking hospitals in the U.S. for 27 years. This year's report compared 5,000 hospitals across the country.
