Sure, it might have been a through-street for many years and it may still look like that's the case, but watch out for a new dead end street that was just created in Rochester.

If your travels regularly take you from George Gibbs Drive (near Soldiers Field Park) to Sixth Avenue Southwest, the Rochester Parks and Recreation Department might have just snarled your plans. Because that intersection -- where George Gibbs Drive connects with Sixth Ave Southwest -- is now a dead end.

According to this Post-Bulletin article, the new dead end was created Sunday morning, right after this year's Rochesterfest ended. The article said creating the dead end was part of the park's master plan, which was created back in 2014.

Now, I'm certainly not a city planner, nor have I attended any park board meetings or even filled out a parks and rec survey relating to the master plan for Soldiers Field Park, (so perhaps I don't understand the traffic and parking challenges the park might be facing) but creating the dead end -- which consists of two sets of planters with a chain between them -- doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Especially when you consider these 'guiding principles' that were created concerning the continued master plan for Soldiers Field Park. The seventh item on that list reads, "Strengthen access and connections to downtown, and other surrounding neighborhoods."

I'm not sure how closing the roadway connection from the park to the Historic Southwest Neighborhood along Sixth Street Southwest 'strengthens access,' but maybe that's just me.

Just keep in mind you'll need to find an alternate route the next time you're trying to either leave Soldiers Field Park via Sixth Street Southwest, or if you were going to use George Gibbs Drive to get downtown from Sixth Avenue Southwest -- because you've just met a new dead end!
