School Board Approves Plan ending Most Sports Cooperative Teams
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester School Board voted Tuesday to implement a plan that will eventually eliminate most of the school district’s high school cooperative sports agreements.
The plan, which was announced last week, was the result of an agreement reached by the Rochester Public Schools and the Rochester Catholic School system after the school district originally proposed ending all of the co-op teams following the next school year.
The revised plan ends the girl’s hockey co-op at the end of the 2016-2017 season, while the lacrosse and wrestling co-ops will continue through the 2018-2019 season and the swimming co-op will continue. The arrangement also allows current Lourdes High School students participating in the lacrosse and wrestling programs at John Marshall High School to stay on the teams through their senior year in 2019.
The Catholic School system has indicated Lourdes will attempt to launch its own girls hockey team for the 2017-2018 season and there is a chance a new cooperative agreement with the Rochester Public Schools for lacrosse and wrestling in 2019, depending on the level of participation in the two sports.
The original plan to end all of the agreements after the next school led to vocal criticism by Lourdes parents, and talk of a possible lawsuit.
