Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The fast-moving winter storm that hit southeastern Minnesota Tuesday has prompted the Rochester Public Schools to cancel classes for a 2nd straight day on Wednesday. For a listing of all of the school closings and other weather related announcements visit the KROC-AM website.

The storm system arrived in the Rochester area in the mid-morning and produced several hours of heavy snow. The latest reports from the National Weather Service indicate 6 to 7 inches of snow fell in the Rochester area.  8.5 inches was reported near Winona and 7.3 inches fell in parts of Fillmore County. Forecasters say light snow will continue and could produce an inch or two of additional accumulation. Some areas could also experience some freezing drizzle. Travel conditions will also be affected by gusty winds that could reach 35 miles per hour.

The heavy snow and winds have created treacherous driving conditions throughout southern Minnesota. Every major roadway in an area west of Albert Lea, including I-90 has been closed to traffic because of blizzard conditions. In southeastern Minnesota, the roads are completely snow-covered and there have been numerous crashes and vehicle spin outs. For the latest information, check MN511.

A snow emergency will be in effect in Rochester through Friday while crews clear the city streets of snow. While the emergency is in effect, parking is prohibited on all streets from midnight through 8 a.m. Vehicles left parked on streets during the hours listed may be ticketed and towed.
