As much as I dislike that a certain amount of chemicals are "allowed" in our food, I understand that farmers use pesticides or there are additives in their animal feed. Just how much is too much? According to an environmental group, nearly 30 breakfast items aimed at children showed amounts of a chemical much higher than what they consider "safe"! A chemical that is the main ingredient in Roundup, and has been known to cause cancer - glyphosate.

This is actually the second round of testing done by the Environmental Working Group after both Quaker and General Mills said there was no reason for concern, and that their products meet the legal standards. EWG's response: "Just because something is legal doesn’t mean it’s safe. Federal government standards for pesticides in food are often outdated, not based on the best and most current science."

They tested nearly 30 products made with conventionally grown oats including Cheerios, cereal bars, granola, and instant oats. Click here to find the entire list of items tested.

In a CBS article, General Mills responds to these test results, "the extremely low levels of pesticide residue cited in recent news reports is a tiny fraction of the amount that the government allows. Consumers are regularly bombarded with alarming headlines, but rarely have the time to weigh the information for themselves."
