College is a time of transition. Gone are the days of mom and dad making sure you are awake and home at a decent hour. It's on you to be a responsible student and adult. College also marks that time in a young person's life where they are most likely leaving home to live for the first time. One of the things that parents want to know is that where their child is living is safe. Northfield can add that to it's resume again this year as the city was named by SafeWise.com as one of the Top 50 safest college towns in America.

According to the website SafeWise.com to come up with its rankings it "dug into the FBI’s 2016 crime data to unearth the college towns with the best safety records." As a parent you're not going to take a chance with your college student’s safety.

To deem a college town “safe,” SafeWise zeroed in on violent crimes per 1,000 people for each city. Violent crimes include murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. They also looked at property crimes (burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson).

Northfield came in at #19 on the list this year, down 8 spots from the year before, but still a Top-20 spot on a pretty prestigious list. The list features college towns like State College, PA, Irvine, CA, Brookings SD, and Dickinson, ND.

Northfield also has been recognized as one of the best places to retire and one of the most beautiful small towns in America. Northfield is a charming river town, where arts, culture, and community are celebrated along the banks of the Cannon River. And those celebrations go off with nary a glitch from criminal or mischievous activities. In 2016, Northfield reported fewer than 230 total crimes, and just sixteen of them were violent.
