Yes, thanks to a new law set to take effect January 1st, 2016, you'll need to provide proof of insurance when you renew your vehicle registration. You'll also need to provide proof of insurance if you're transferring ownership (i.e., selling) a vehicle starting next year, too.

The new information you'll need to provide includes the name of your insurance company, your insurance policy number and the policy expiration date.

So what's with the change? According to this TwinCities.com story, "the law was changed in an effort to reduce the number of people driving without insurance." Makes sense, I guess.

So while you'll need to show specific proof of insurance starting next year, it's not really all that much of a change-- we were always required to have insurance. Previously, though, we just all 'certified' that we had coverage on our vehicles when we bought our tabs each year.

And nobody would purposely tell an untruth to the DMV, would they? Now, where did I put my insurance info?
