Waseca, MN (KROC AM News) - Minnesota - we have a new precipitation record.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says the small southern town of Waseca has set a new official state precipitation record.

The 2016 total as of Nov 28 was 53.78 inches. The previous annual record was 53.52 inches, set in 1991 in the Anoka County town of St. Francis. The 1981-2010 normal precipitation for Waseca is 35.72 inches.

The record was set in large part due to heavy rain that fell across southern Minnesota in late September. The Waseca area was inundated with 14 inches of rain within a 48 hour period.

The DNR says the Waseca record is the highest in over 20,000 Minnesota statewide annual precipitation totals over the past 125 years.

The Waseca measurements are recorded at the University of Minnesota Southern Research and Outreach Center, which has been operational since 1914.
