Politics aside, it's kind of cool to note that the same coffee maker we have at our house is also being used... in the White House.

Yes, in our continuing quest to brew the perfect cup of coffee, my wife bought me one of these specially-designed, non-porous glass coffee makers made by Chemex for my birthday a few years ago. It's a pretty simple concept: you boil some water, add your ground up coffee to their specially-made filter, and then pour the boiling water over the coffee, which then drips into their glass container.

What makes it so good? Well, according to their website, "The Chemex® coffeemaker, together with Chemex-Bonded® Coffee Filter, makes perfect coffee. Clear, pure, flavorful and without bitterness or sediment every time. The coffee only comes in contact with the scientifically designed filter and non-porous glass. With the Chemex® method, you can make coffee as strong as you like without bitterness."

We've been using it for over a year now, and it really does produce a pretty good cup of coffee. It's about as close to something you'd get at a coffee shop, but it's brewed right at home. And apparently we're not the only ones to notice how good a cup of Chemex coffee is.

It's so good, in fact, that my wife spotted this story that says there are now 50 Chemex coffee makers now in use in the White House-- although theirs are etched with Presidential seal. I'm guessing that costs extra. The story says they're an upgrade from the old Mr. Coffee coffee makers that had been in use inside 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C.

So, yeah. Looks like the leader of the free world gets his morning started with a cup of java made by the same coffee maker as I do. And that's pretty much where the similarities end...
