Weather forecasters say the big winter storm headed our way starting Monday afternoon could dump nearly a foot of snow on most parts of the Quick Country 96.5 listening area. But do you remember the last times Rochester had a 10-inch snowfall in a single day?

Well, thanks to the gang over at the National Weather Service in La Crosse, there have been only two times in the last five years that the Med City was hit with a big dump of snow-- one greater than 10-inches in a single day.

The latest time happened not in winter, but in the spring-- May 2nd, 2013, to be exact. That freak spring super storm dumped 14-inches of wet, heavy snow across portions of southeast Minnesota.

I was working at a local TV station at the time and was headed in early that morning (about 4 a.m.) to help cover all the school closings that were coming in. I nearly got stuck trying to motor up the small hill near our house, and when I finally made it to West Circle Drive, I just kept driving-- even through one red light (where no other cars were coming) because I knew I'd get stuck if I lost my momentum on the yet-to-be-plowed streets.

Before that May 2013 snowstorm, the last time Rochester experienced a snowfall of over 10-inches in a single day was the infamous December snowstorm of 2010. December 11, 2010, to be exact-- when Rochester was hit with 15-inches of snow. That was the same storm that collapsed the roof of the Metrodome, and forced the Vikings to play their last home game of the year at TCF Bank Stadium (after having played their Sunday, Dec. 12th 'home' game at Ford Field in Detroit.)
