I was filling up my car the other day and as always, the voice on the intercom came on and said, "Pump 9 is on." It got me thinking, "why do they do that?" I already know the pump is on. I'm using it.
I asked my listeners who might work at a convenience store why they did that and the answer surprised me.

Many callers called in and told me that the reason they do that is to let the driver know that the worker is aware they are there, so they don't drive off. It is to prevent bad people who drive off without paying.

If that was me, I'd be a little creative and add stuff like, "Pump 9 is on and, by the way, you look great today!" Or "Pump 9 is on and that is a beautiful dress you have on, lady."

And to YOU reading this? I hope you have a great day today, too! - Alan
